Life Without Power

October 5, 2007

Did you ever think about what your life would be like if
there were no electricity in your home? I've thought about
it every time we had a power outage.

First, the alarm clock couldn't use batteries or be plugged
into the wall. It would have to be the old wind-up type of
clock. Then, to make your breakfast would mean building a
fire to cook over and to make your coffee.

To get to work would not be by a car or mass transit.
These all run on electricity of some sort. You would
either walk or saddle up and ride a horse. Maybe you have
a wagon and a team of horses to hitch up to the wagon.

If you worked in an office, there would be no fancy
equipment plugged into the wall. Computers, copiers,
calculators and printers are all run on electricity and
would not exist. You would do all your work with a pencil
and paper and manually run machines. All of this manual
labor took a long time to do, but life would be a lot
slower too.

It seems like this picture is something out of the ancient
past, but it really wasn't that long ago. We take all our
electrical conveniences for granted today, but our
grandparents didn't have most of them when they grew up.

Unfortunately, because everything runs on electricity, when
there is a shortage or an outage, we can no longer conduct
business or function. Back then, it didn't matter because
everything depended on people doing the work and not the
machines.

Today we can do a lot more in a shorter amount of time
because of the convenience of having electrical power.
Life also moves much faster now and requires us to do the
same, but it is also easier, than it was before the advent
of electricity.
